Dorm Supplies Haul: The Container Store, Walmart, and more

Now that we’re only weeks away from the start of school, I decided to show you guys some of the things I’ve picked up for my dorm room. For those of you that don’t know, I’m starting my freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin this month as a Biomedical Engineering major. And since it’s my freshman year, I wanted to make sure my dorm room stayed neat and organized, even though it won’t be as spacious as my room at home.

Keep reading to see what I bought!

Since I’m in a shared room with another girl, organization is key so that all of my things are contained neatly on my side of the room. The white storage basket in the top left of the photo below was only a few bucks at The Container Store, so I bought one to corral some of my products. At home, they’re usually around my sink or in the cabinets underneath it, but at school they’ll need to be on a shelf somewhere, so I bought the basket to keep them all standing together.

The acrylic organizer is also from The Container Store, and I thought it’d be a great way to organize my makeup on top of my dresser, or even inside of a drawer. The compartments are perfectly sized for different makeup products, and the clear acrylic looks sleek enough to be displayed on a dresser as well.

The third organizational item I bought was from Bed Bath & Beyond, and it’s a hanging jewelry and scarf organizer. I actually bought one for my sister when she started college a few years ago, and they’re super useful for neatly storing all sorts of jewelry in a compact fashion. I love that this one has loops to hold scarves too.

I talked about the chevron towel wrap a while ago in my Kohl’s Haul, but I recently picked up this silky soft throw at Walmart. It was actually the last one left, so I’m super glad that I got to it. It’s quite big, so I can use it on the bed in the wintertime, or just have it around for when the AC is on really high. Additionally, I think adding a touch of school spirit to your room is a great way to make yourself feel at home on campus.dorm comfortFinally, I went ahead and bought some basic school supplies. I’m the sort of person that forgets to do things unless they’re written down, so a planner is a must-have for me. I’ve used one every year since sixth grade, and they’re a great way to keep track of assignments and upcoming tests or due dates. Since my things get pretty roughed up in my backpack, I like the Mead Five Star planners. They’re super tough and durable, and always last through the year.

I also bought a 99 cent pack of Bic pens for everyday use. As much as I love the more expensive, fine-tipped ink pens, I find it a little ridiculous to pay $5 for only two or three pens. These Bic packs come with ten pens for only a dollar, and they write smoothly and last a pretty long time. Best of all, you won’t feel guilty if you lose one.

The last thing I bought for my room was a dry-erase calendar. I found this one at Walmart and thought it’d be perfect. UT Austin doesn’t let you use pushpins or tacks on the walls, so everything has to be hung up using 3M sticky strips or something similar. This calendar not only comes with a marker and two magnets, but it comes with a 3M strip for each side. I think it’ll be super useful to keep track of upcoming events or deadlines that month.

Congratulations on starting your freshman year at UT Austin! Ahh I remember being a freshman. So scared yet so happy. One tip I would give since you are going to be in a dorm is to get twin xl sheets because dorm beds are longer than normal beds. Oh make sure you get to know your roommate before you guys move in too so it won’t be so awkward.
